TALKING POINT: TOP RED

Throughout the season we'll ask for the views of fans, staff, former players and pundits on the latest United issues.

“Antonio Valencia was a revelation in his first term and looked sharp in preseason. His supply to the front men is second to none, he’s extremely fit and I expect him to weigh in with a few more goals in this campaign. So he’s the key man for me.”
James Tuck, international websites editor

“People go on about Park’s energy, but there’s more to his game than hard work. He was effective as a defensive spoiler against Milan, and at the World Cup he was a great creative central midfielder. His versatility will be key.”
Nick Coppack, contributing editor

“Chicharito certainly made an impact in pre-season and I expect him to play a big part in the coming campaign. Aside from his talent and eye for goal, it’s his relaxed demeanour that has really stood out for me. I’m confident he’ll chip in with his fair share of goals as well.”
Gemma Thompson, contributing editor

“How can you look beyond Rooney? He was the star last season and any post-World Cup flak he gets will merely bring the best out of him. I expect he’ll finish with a similar goal tally to last term’s – and he’ll be the team’s talisman once again.”
Paul Davies, editor United Review

“I'm going for Nani. Rooney’s our talisman, and Fletch’s commitment is stamped right across the team, but I have a feeling the winger will become a star for United this season. He has the ability, he’ll get us goals and his form later in the last campaign was outstanding. I’m sure now he’ll kick on.”
Ben Hibbs, deputy editor ManUtd.com
“Valencia is built like a tank, has ridiculous pace and boasts the widest variety of crossing I’ve seen in a United wide man. He had a great first term with the club, but I fully expect more goals and more assists from him this time round.”
Steve Bartram, contributing editor

The ex-player
Alex Stepney says…
“We have great players who can change games, but one man who I think deserves his place in the team every week is Darren Fletcher. He’s worked hard to become absolutely vital to United. There isn’t an opposition player in the league who can take him out of the game. He’s influential in the dressing room and on the pitch. Fletch isn’t a playmaker like Paul Scholes, but gets stuck in, dictates the pace of games, adapts to any situation and scores important goals. More of the same from Darren and we have a great chance of winning trophies.”

The pundit
The Guardian’s Danny Taylor says…
“This might sound a little knee-jerk after seeing him so few times but I’ll admit it – I’ve got a tenner on Javier Hernandez becoming Premier League top scorer, at remarkably generous odds of 33-1. Everything I’ve seen of Chicharito so far oozes class. Sir Alex is already comparing him to Solskjaer and, as we all know, that’s high praise indeed. I might not win my money, but one certainty is that Hernandez will take the pressure off Rooney when it comes to scoring goals.”
