Everything that Chicharito does is about speed, including his post-match interviews!
I was delighted to get the chance to speak to him on MUTV after his home debut last night. He asked me to speak slowly. Next time, I’ll ask him to speak slowly! His answers were lightning quick. Normally, when I ask a player a question, whilst they’re answering I think about my next one. But with Chicharito, that was impossible. He was a blur of words and finished his answers in a flash. Like a defender trying to mark him, I was left floundering, gasping for breath. I was all over the place with my brain desperately trying to tick over in time to get another question out.
This afternoon, the young Mexican appeared at a press conference at Old Trafford alongside new signing Chris Smalling and Bebe. He was articulate, bright and gave thoughtful answers to the barrage of questions aimed at him. He was very impressive and you got the impression that he’s absolutely loving life as a United player. And he spoke a lot slower! The only disappointment last night was that he didn’t score after coming on as a substitute. You could feel the whole of Old Trafford willing him to find the net on his league debut. It wasn’t to be, but I bet that it won’t be long before the goals are flying in from all angles.
Chicharito will also learn a lot from Giggs and Scholes. The two United legends just roll on and on. Scholes was outstanding in pre-season. Then he was Man of the Match at Wembley in the Community Shield and picked up the bubbly again last night. What a player. He controlled the game and his pass for Giggs to whack home the third goal late on rounded off the night perfectly. It means Giggs keeps up his remarkable record of scoring in every Premier League season. A truly astonishing feat. It may be a new season but some things never change.
