Manchester United is said to be tracking the 2010 FIFA World Cup's leading goal scorer Wesley Sneijder as a long-term replacement for one of their most of their most gracious midfield servants.
Sir Alex Ferguson has always been an admirer of the Inter Milan midfielder, and possibly sees him as a successor to Paul Scholes who will more than likely will retire following the 2010/11 season.
Like Ryan Giggs and Gary Neville, Scholes signed a one-year contract deal this spring, but the midfielder knows that he is in the twilight of his outstanding career and Sneijder is very suitable replacement as the two players' style is very similar.
Sneijder has been in outstanding form this season for both club and country, and he has already scored five goals in Netherlands impressive run to the final of this summer's tournament.
Like Scholes, he has been a thorn in the opposition's side, because of his well-timed runs, and his uncanny ability to be in the right position.
Career
Ferguson was tempted to make a move for the tiny midfielder, but the Dutch international opted for a move to Real Madrid. Sneijder's stint with the Spanish giants was not as fruitful as he thought, and he found playing limited as he only made 52 appearances in two seasons.
With a new manager - Manuel Pellegrini - coming into Real, Sneijder knew that he needed to leave the Spanish capital in attempts to make sure that he was in line to compete for a place with his country this summer, so he moved onto Inter Milan.
In his first season in Italy, he tallied just eight times in 41 matches, but the role he played help Jose Mourinho and Inter to an unprecedented treble - winning the Serie A, Coppa Italia and the UEFA Champions League.
The 26-year old registered six assists and scored three goals in just 11 Champions League appearances last season, which is as all United supporters know, Sir Alex's most valued competition.
With the Ginger Prince all but set to retire next season, it would come as no surprise if Sir Alex brings in the Oranje midfielder to add experience and charisma to the Manchester United squad.
