Unlike Chelsea, United have been in this position five times before, but only once - in the 1994/95 season - have they not came out with the trophy in their clutches.
The last time they faced last day drama was in the 2007/08, and going into the final match of the season, United only lead Chelsea on goal difference, so they needed to win to make sure the title remained at Old Trafford.
On that day, United defeated Wigan Athletic 2-0, and Chelsea could only manage a 1-1 home draw against Bolton Wanderers, so they won the league by two points.
The lead at the top of the table has switched hands no fewer than 22 times in 37 match days, which could give United some hope there is still a chance for them to pip the trophy from Chelsea.
The Premier League chiefs have sent the real Premier League trophy to Stamford Bridge, because they are expecting Chelsea to beat Wigan - a team that beat them 3-1 in the reverse fixture in September - but it is a big ask of a team that is currently 15th place in the league table.
Costly
There have been many matches that pundits can put their finger on to why United are not in the poll position to claim their fourth consecutive title, but the injuries that Ferguson was face with this season was amazing to say the least.
Patrice Evra has been the only United player to have played in every single game in the Premier League this season - one of those appearances came as a late substitution against Blackburn Rovers.
Ferguson has only been able to play his first-choice back five (goalkeeper and back four) ONCE since the 2007/08 UEFA Champions League final - and that only last 45 minutes when Wes Brown was forced off with a broken bone against Wolverhampton in March.
Despite all of the injuries, Sir Alex must be pleased the way that the other players in his squad have willingly filled in for the absentees - especially when he partnered up center midfielders, Darren Fletcher and Michael Carrick, in the central of defense for a couple of matches in November and December.
During that tough stretch of matches, Ferguson only had one of his one of his 10 defenders fit, and was forced to shuffle his line-up, which was eventually exposed in the 3-0 loss to Fulham.
The bottom line, Ferguson just wants his players to have fun and not be nervy about their performance, because he knows the pressure is clearly on Chelsea.
If Chelsea fail to land this season title, it will be one of the biggest tragedies in the history of the Premier League, because they held a clear four point advantage with as many matches to go.
No matter how the final Matchday plays out, the Manchester United supporters should be best pleased with how their club has performed and not gave up - especially when everything seemed to be lost.
