A Win For Wayne

To no surprise, Manchester United's Wayne Rooney has been named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year, but he missed out claiming the double as the Young Player of the Year went to Aston Villa's James Milner.

Not only did Rooney win the PFA Player of the Year award, but United was very well representative on the PFA Team of the Year, which shows that the players in the Barclays Premier League know that Rooney's success is not down to his own ability.

Obviously, Rooney made the PFA Team of the Year, and he was joined by three of his teammates - Patrice Evra, Darren Fletcher and Antonio Valencia - which made United the most represented club with four of the 11 players.

The 24-year old has admitted that he would not have scored half of the goals he has this season without the service of his teammates.

Evra, Fletcher and Valencia have been vital to the success of United with their determination, drive and ability create chances for their go-to-man.

Rooney has had, without question, the best season so far in his young career by already bagging 34 goals in all competitions - despite missing half of United's matches in the last month.

Rooney has been in sensational form this year and has shoulder the brunt of United's goal scoring duties and did it with ease and determination.

The young center forward has struggled with injuries lately, but thar still has not prevented him from being the Premier League's leading goal scorer with 26 goals.

He leads the race for the Premier League's Golden Boot award by a single goal over Didier Drogba, but there is a fear that Rooney's season is over with yet another nagging injury.

Rooney picked up a groin injury in training last week, but the injury is usually tied up with fatigue, and the all-out effort he displays in every match it should come to no surprise that his body is breaking down.

Drogba, Cesc Fabregas and former United star Carlos Tevez were the other players up for this year's award, but the young Englishman saw them off to land this prestigious award.

History
Rooney's capture of this personal accolade is the fourth time a United player has won this award in as many years, and with their dominance over the last 18 years, they have had the most players to win in that time.

Ryan Giggs, Cristiano Ronaldo (twice), Ruud van Nistelrooy, Teddy Sheringham, Roy Keane, Eric Cantona, Gary Pallister and Mark Hughes have all won this award under Sir Alex Ferguson's reign as United manager.

Milner and Rooney became the first Engish duo to scoop the awards since Liverpool's Steven Gerrard and the United center forward won them in 2005.

Wayne Rooney has never been a player who has dwelled on winning personal honors, with that said, he will hope that this is not the only piece of silveware he will get his hands on this season, and him and his Manchester United teammates will go on to lift the 2009/10 Barclays Premier League trophy.
