Gary Neville showed that he is, without question, one of the most passionate players to ever pull on the Manchester United shirt, and he showed us proof of that in Manchester derby.
The way in which he erupted into emotion when Michael Owen scored the match-winner against Manchester City brought back fond memories for all United fans.
Neville’s celebration was a flashback to when delirium broke out when United came back from the death against Sheffield Wednesday to secure their first top-flight league title in 26 years. During that outburst, Assistant Manager Brian Kidd raced onto the field and went down on his knees celebrating in complete ecstasy.
Destiny & Dream
Gary replaced the legend Roy Keane as United captain following the Irishman’s controversial departure in the middle of the 2005/06 season. Really, there could not have been a better successor to Captain Fantastic.
There was always evidence that he would take over the privilege from Keane, but it was never more evident then when he captained the side against City in 2002/03 season.
The pre-match walk out at Maine Road, had him lineup against his former teammate and United legend, Peter Schmeichel. When Big Pete went to say hello and shake his hand, Neville did not bat an eye or even acknowledge him. His focus and determination was on the task at hand (United lost to City 3-1 on defensive miscues).
Inspiring
Neville has made 574 appearances for the club since making his debut over 17 years ago.
During his 17 years of service, United have won the English Premier League 11 times, the FA Cup four times, the Football League Cup three times, seven FA Charity/Community Shields, two European Cups, the FIFA Club World Cup and the Intercontinental Cup.
While still serving as club captain, his first-team appearances have been dramatically reduced, but Neville still plays a vital role in Sir Alex Ferguson’s plan for propelling the club forward to yet another successful campaign.
Ferguson has entrusted him – as well Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs – to provide leadership and guidance to the young up & coming players. When healthy and fit, he will more than likely make the United bench, because he now lacks the pace and stamina to play week-in and week-out.
He led United out in mid-week clash against Wolverhampton in the Carling Cup, and showed that he is still a valuable asset to the club (even though his defensive miscue almost allowed Wolves to grab the opener).
He has always been singled-out by opposing fans, but it is his focus, desire and determination that has allowed him to prolong his career at the highest of levels.
Any manager in the Premier League would love to have Neville amongst their defensive options, because of his undeniable leadership qualities, but unlike his brother Phil, there is only one club for him, and that is Manchester United.
