Manchester United has one of the soundest central defensive partnerships in Europe with Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic, but there is a young Northern Ireland international wants to disrupt it.
Young Jonny Evans has really come into his own earlier than expected, and that he is giving Sir Alex Ferguson a selection headache every week.
The only thing that keeps him out of some of the matches is that he is only 21, but he is well ahead in terms of maturity, and has filled in nicely for Sir Alex when needed.
Both Ferdinand and Vidic missed time through either injury or suspension last season, and that allowed Evans to make 34 appearances for the United first team.
It was not like those appearances came against Wolverhampton either. He made appearances against Arsenal, Chelsea and Inter Milan, which goes to show his mental toughness, and ability to challenge the best of the best.
Piq Me
Sir Alex has always seen him as a future centerback at United, and allowed Gerard Pique to leave for Barcelona, because there was only room for one of them.
Pique was another one for the future, but the Gaffer was forced to decide to keep him or Evans, because he knew that keeping both young central defenders was out of the question.
Roy Keane and Sunderland submitted a bid for Evans, but that was quickly rejected, and Evans was told that his future was with his boyhood club.
Worry
Evans has missed time this year due to a lingering ankle injury, and he has admitted that he will eventually need surgery to repair the injury.
He has made four appearances this season, but he could have had made one or two more if it weren’t for an injury/illness.
Duo
Along with Evans, United have another up and coming central defender Craig Cathcart, that will be looking to break into the United first team in the next two years.
Even with the great George Best, Northern Ireland has never appeared in a World Cup, but that could soon change with the central defensive partnership that could lead United into a new era.
Both Jonny and Craig stand at 6’2” tall, and have gone onto make 16, and 11 appearances for the Northern Ireland national team, respectively.
Cathcart is a year younger than Evans, and has yet to appear for the United first team. He gone out on loan the last three seasons - Royal Antwerp (Belgium), Plymouth Argyle and Watford.
With Evans already challenging for a place in the United starting XI, there should not be any worried supporters if Rio or Nemanja go down injured.
