Carricking Again

Sir Alex Ferguson has recently stated that midfielder, Michael Carrick, has always gotten off to a slow start since joining Manchester United, and that is good news for the supporters, because he is someone that can provide an dimension to the attack.

Even though he has had a sluggish start the season, Carrick has been one of the most consistent United players since his arrival from Tottenham in the summer of 2006, and he will play a big part of any success the club will have this season.

With him coming into full fitness and form, United’s midfield can only benefit from it. His ability to pick out a player with his vision and passing is second-to-none.

His passing is vital to the United counterattack, because he can ping a cross-field ball to switch the fields and that opens up gaps in the defense.

He has the ability to compliment any of the other midfielders in the current United squad – whether it is Darren Fletcher, Paul Scholes, Ryan Giggs, Anderson and the fit-again Owen Hargreaves.

Early
Carrick started his career as a center forward, but when he arrived at the famous West Ham United youth academy they converted him into a center midfielder.

His professional career began in 1999 with West Ham, and he made 140 appearances for them in five seasons.

He left West Ham following their relegation from the English Premier League in the summer of 2004, and was snapped up by Tottenham for a mere £2.75 million.

He asserted himself as one of the up & coming center midfielders under Martin Jol, and went onto make 64 appearances before United came in for him.

He was given the No. 16 shirt, which was vacant following the departure of United’s talisman Roy Keane departed the club.

A lot of speculation was made that he was Sir Alex’s choice to replace the fiery Irishman, but the supporters soon found out that he was not the same style of player as Captain Fantastic.

The only comparisons that can be made between the two players are their composure and confidence. Carrick is very composed on the ball, and it is very seldom that he can become rattled by the opposition.

Manchester United’s midfield is loaded with options and possible combinations, but there is no reason why Carrick cannot claim one of those first-choice spots.
