Gibson Me a Chance

Darron Gibson was given a sure vote of confidence by Sir Alex Ferguson when he offered the young midfielder a long-term contract that will keep him at Manchester United until 2012.

The Republic of Ireland international has showed the United supporters exactly why he was offered the contract extension with a Man of the Match performance against Wolverhampton in the Carling Cup.

His performance showed that he not only has the industry, but he also the wherewithal that are more than capable to compete for a place in the United first team.

United were reduced to 10-man following the unfortunate sending off of left-back Fabio, but Gibson put in a performance that more than made up for the loss of the young Brazilian as he covered almost blade of the Old Trafford pitch.

Competition
Gibson knows very well that he has a daunting task ahead of him to try to break into the United first team.

The United center midfield positions are already being hotly-contested by Darren Fletcher, Anderson, Michael Carrick, as well as United old boys Paul Scholes and Ryan Giggs.

Also, with Owen Hargreaves also on the verge of returning, the competition will become even more intense.

Deadly
Darron has shown United supporters that he has one of the fiercest of shots a few times already in his short career, but they can definitely expect more of the same from him over the next few seasons.

He has tallied three goals so far in 16 appearances for the United first team.

His best goal yet came in a pre-season friendly against Peterborough. He unleashed an unstoppable blast, with what is deemed his weaker foot, into the top left-hand corner of the net.

His right-footed drive against Hull City on the final match day of last season was not half bad either! He hit a stunning drive from 25-yards out into the far top corner that the goalkeeper had absolutely no chance of saving!

Dues
The 21-year old did not come up through the youth system, but like most of the younger players at United, he spent time out on loan.

He spent the entire 2006/07 season at what is called United’s feeder club, Royal Antwerp. Life was made easier for him during his time in Belgium, because he spent the season with a quartet of United reserve players (Dong Fangzhuo, Jonny Evans, Fraizer Campbell and Danny Simpson).

With United having more than enough coverage in the center of the midfield he was again loaned out for the 2007/08 season with Wolverhampton as his destination.

It was at Wolves where he really started to come into his own. He developed and matured so much so, that Mick McCarthy put in a bid for him, which Sir Alex quickly turned down. He played in a total of 57 matches during both of his loan spells.

Gibson will eventually be the focal point of the United attack as well as protecting the back four for years to come.
